Resident Graduate Student Position

RESIDENT GRADUATE STUDENT (RGS) JOB DESCRIPTION

FSI Summer 2021

What is the Freshman Scholars Institute (FSI)?

FSI is a seven-week online summer program that allows a cohort of entering students the chance to experience the intellectual, co-curricular, and social life at Princeton prior to the beginning of the fall semester.  During the program, Freshman Scholars immerse themselves in the intellectually vibrant culture at Princeton through one credit-bearing seminar-style course. They engage with fellow scholars in a variety of co-curricular, community-building activities and work closely with faculty members from a range of academic disciplines and fields. By experiencing early the many resources that Princeton has to offer, Freshman Scholars have the chance to prepare themselves to be future campus leaders and peer mentors.  In the summer of 2021, FSI will begin on June 27th and conclude on August 22nd

FSI Resident Graduate Students (RGSes) play a crucial role in the administration of the program, serving as liaisons between the undergraduate students (participants and Residential College Advisers) and FSI program administrators.

What does an RGS do?

RGSes have the following primary responsibilities during FSI, which they undertake with the support of a Director of Student Life, Olivia Weiner, and FSI’s Associate Director, Dr. Ashlee Shaw:

·  Facilitating weekly “core group” meeting of FSI Residential College Advisers (RCAs), a group of 10-15 undergraduates who act as advisers and mentors to the incoming freshmen;

·  Assisting with the programming of non-academic activities for FSI participants, especially on evenings and weekends;

·  Promoting the programs developed by the McGraw Center for Teaching and Learning designed to provide participants with academic support (study halls, academic skills workshops);

·  Offering developmentally appropriate advising;

·  Coordinating with the Director of Student Life (DSL) and the Associate Director of the Freshman Scholars Institute to respond to any crisis situations;

·  Ensuring strong communication between the RCAs and the FSI program administrators and promoting the smooth operation of the program in all ways necessary.

When is the program?

June 27 – August 22, 2021. In addition to these summer commitments, RGSes should plan on attending professional development trainings and staff meetings in late May and early June (dates and times TBD).

What is the time commitment involved?

Approximately 20 hours per week, with evening and weekend work required.

Will the program be virtual or residential?

While the core components of FSI 2021 will be virtual, we anticipate that there will be a subset of FSI Scholars who may need on-campus accommodations during the program period-- and therefore, would be in need of an in-person RGS. If you plan on living on campus, or would be interested in living on campus for the summer 2021 period, please indicate this in your application. Compensation would be adjusted to include room and board in addition to the compensation outlined below.

How is the RGS compensated?

The RGS receives a taxable stipend of between $4,500 and $5,000. (NB: A salary range is provided, as total compensation over the summer cannot exceed the limit set by the Graduate School.)

Who is eligible to be a RGS?

Eligibility is limited to enrolled or post-enrolled Princeton graduate students. Only in rare exceptions will non-Princeton graduate students be considered. Preference will be given to students who have completed their general exams before the start of the program.

How does the application process work?

If you are interested in the position, contact Dr. Ashlee Shaw ([email protected]) or Olivia Weiner ([email protected]).  A completed application (including the names and contact information of two references, one faculty) must be submitted electronically to [email protected] by noon on Monday, March 22nd.  After an initial review of applications, those candidates whose credentials seem to most closely fit the needs of the position will be invited to interview the following week.  Please keep in mind that a background check is required upon being hired.
