Alumni (and friends!) play a hugely important and powerful role in our FLI community, helping us to surround our scholars with mentorship, guidance, and care. We recognize that there is no "one-size-fits-all" brand of mentorship, so there are many different ways for you to get involved.
For instance, you may want to get to know students through our virtual alumni chats, sharing your experiences via our "Pathways Through Princeton" program, offering glimpses of what your career entails through our “A Day in the Life” series, and participating in our FLI student/alumni mentorship program. Through these opportunities, you can connect with students about your time at Princeton, career advice, and general professional development.
You may also be interested in being featured in one of our "Spotlight on an Alum" social media posts. If you identified as a first-generation or low-income student during your time at Princeton, we'd love to have you share your story with current SIFP Fellows through an online feature about first-gen, low-income (FLI) alumni.
If you’re interested in any of these opportunities, please complete THIS FORM. You can contact Dr. Andy Hakim ([email protected]) or Courtney Perales ([email protected]) with your questions.
SIFP Initiatives:
During the 2020-2021 academic year, Princeton’s Programs for Access and Inclusion (PAI) has three main opportunities for alumni to engage with students. Please click on the tabs below to learn more about each opportunity.
1) Alumni Chats. Are you interested in meeting current first-generation, low-income (FLI) students at Princeton and sharing your experiences with them? Every Sunday during the academic year, PAI features alumni for face-to-face Zoom casual conversations.
2) “Pathways through Princeton.” Would you be willing to share your story of how you navigated the university, both academically and socially? The “Pathways through Princeton” program features interactive maps of recent alumni’s paths through the university. Alumni participants collaborate with PAI staff to create visual “paths” that are shared with the wider FLI community at Princeton.
3) “A Day in the Life.” Are you willing to offer students a glimpse of your work life, of what it means to do what you do? In this social media initiative, alumni work with PAI staff to create short videos and Instagram stories demonstrating how they go about their jobs from home during the pandemic. Finding shadowing and internship opportunities can be challenging right now, so the “A Day in the Life” series aims to help students understand what a particular career entails and how they might pursue various options.
Partner Program Initiatives:
The Office of Career Development is launching a new online platform - Project Career Compass - where Alumni can show what happens after leaving the orange bubble. Students are eager to learn from alumni and hear their stories! If interested, could you please take 10 minutes to submit a written profile to get this program rolling? Your responses will only be viewable by Princetonians. A sample of a completed profile is available so you can get an idea of what it will look like.
